After nearly two years, All is for All and Special launched the Inclusive Code a couple of weeks ago. The tool was co-developed by a group of disabled experts, including leading advocate Karen Pointon QSM, law graduate and disability advocate, Thomas Chin and d/Deaf campaigner, Hope Cotton.
The Inclusive Code is a tool for advertising industry professionals to reflect on normalised but exclusionary practices. It is designed to help people design campaigns that better include disabled people, who make up a quarter of New Zealanders but feature in only 1% of prime-time advertisements and are only 8% of New Zealand's marketing and communications industry.
The tool is a foundational mechanism to support the industry and can be viewed online: https://the-inclusive-code.co.nz/
All is for All partnered on the development of the Inclusive Code and connected Special to the co-design group. Pati Umaga was also a partner on the work, a leader in our community who continues to make significant contributions, also in creative spaces for disabled people.
Chelsea participated in the Auckland panel Q&A after the event, she cautioned people not to feel like they have to start from scratch if they realise they need to do more in respect of disability inclusion, instead, use it as a time to reflect and do better from here on out.
