The Inclusive Code is aiming to help embed disability inclusion into New Zealand's advertising industry. The Code is an educational tool designed to encourage practitioners to begin rethinking disability in advertising. It’s not a set of rules; it's a guide that supports reflection and challenges the exclusionary practices that have become normalised in the industry.

Some of the team behind the Code
Developed over two years in close collaboration with industry, experts and people with lived experience of disability, the Code provides actionable insights and perspectives to help the industry better connect with the estimated 16% of the global population who are disabled and often underserved or misrepresented. The ultimate goal is to foster a more inclusive sector, leading to more informed and inclusive advertising choices that support better results.
The Gold Pin recognition at the Best Design Awards, one of Australasia's largest annual showcases of design excellence, underscores The Inclusive Code’s success in both form and function. We are incredibly grateful for our collaboration with Special.
Importance of Co-Design
The project's development was grounded in authentic co-design, ensuring the perspectives of disabled people were not just considered, but were the central driving force behind the creation of the tool.
Key contributors included Fonoti Pati Umaga (QSM), Hope Cotton, Karen Pointon (QSM), Sean Prenter, Shane McInroe and others.
The Inclusive Code is an easily digestible resource that encourages a deeper, more empathetic understanding of the diverse lived experiences of disabled people.

This past week All is for All launched the Inclusive Code with Special. The Inclusive Code was co-designed with the Disability Community and supported by New Territory. The Inclusive Code is a foundational tool to support the advertising sector to understand the importance of disability inclusion and reflect on normalised exclusionary behaviours.
